How Are Ethically Sourced Shoes Different?
With so many of us prioritizing sustainability in our daily lives, why should shoes be an exception? Truly sustainable sneakers and shoes are designed in a way that’s better for you and the environment, and created using low-impact methods throughout the supply & manufacturing processes. Here at CARIUMA, we make sustainable sneakers that are durable, comfortable and stylish. With that in mind, what exactly makes ethically-made sneakers unique?
An Overview of Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Shoes
The operating principles of fast fashion tend to be a problem in the footwear industry at-large.
Cheap materials and unethical labor practices are prioritized to accommodate the pace of fast-fashion. Fast fashion methods, responsible for the creation of many sneakers and other footwear, also introduce polluting products like toxic dyes and plastics to the environment. Did you know fashion is the second-most polluting industry on the planet, behind only the oil industry?
In creating eco-friendly footwear at CARIUMA, we commit to sourcing materials and methods of production that are far more sustainable for people and the planet. Our products are high-quality and are designed for longevity. Because of the conscious practices involved in the design & creation of CARIUMA sneakers, there’s a sense of detail and design quality that you wouldn’t otherwise find in traditional and fast-fashion footwear.
The materials used to create our environmentally friendly sneakers are key to our overall impact. Read on to learn more about our premium natural materials:
When bamboo is cut from the stalk, it’s capable of regenerating, just like grass from a field. This method protects the integrity of the plant and soil. Bamboo is also a natural antibacterial, produces minimal waste and guarantees no harmful chemicals are used. Our bamboo is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and OEKO-TEX.
Our organic cotton is both organic and pesticide-free. Not to mention, cotton canvas sneakers are lightweight, breathable, and versatile.
Natural rubber is gathered from the Hevea brasiliensis tree through ethical “tapping” (removing a milky sap from its bark). No trees are ever harmed in the production of our sneakers!
Many standard dyes are toxic to people and the environment. Our Bluesign-certified dyes, on the other hand, do not contain hazardous chemicals.
Other Sustainability Practices
Our production partners are also part of this chain of responsibility. Our ethical factories follow a strict Code of Conduct, ensuring that our factory employees are paid a fair, living wage and work in a safe, supportive environment.
We also utilize sustainable shipping practices. The goal is to reduce our overall carbon footprint through our practices from start-to-finish: the finish being your sustainable sneakers arriving on your doorstep in single-box packaging! The use of recycled materials and minimal packaging is an important part of minimizing our impact on the environment.
Beyond environmentally friendly shoes, we’re committed to giving back and preserving the long-term health of our planet. Our Pair-for-Pair reforestation program plants a pair of trees in the Brazilian rainforest for each pair of sustainable shoes you purchase.
When you invest in sustainable sneakers and footwear, you’re creating a foundation of sustainability and consciousness for other areas of your life. You’ll also enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing you’re making a lasting, positive impact through your everyday choices.
